A new documentary, Unmasking Influence, has been released, highlighting how commercial actors shape public health, policy and everyday environments.
Produced by researchers from the Commercial Determinants Research Group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and supported by the SPECTRUM consortium, the film draws on research examining how industries such as alcohol, food, infant formula, pesticides, social media, pharmaceuticals and others influence science, policy, regulation and public perceptions.
Through expert insights from civil society, health professionals, a journalist, and researchers, and real-world examples from high and low and middle income countries, the documentary brings to light the harmful strategies used by commercial actors and their implications for health and health inequalities. It aims to make complex evidence more accessible and to support greater awareness among policymakers, researchers and the public of the need to address the commercial determinants of health.
Unmasking Influence demonstrates the value of innovative approaches to knowledge exchange, using film to translate research into engaging and impactful formats that can inform policy and public debate.
